Ayurveda Drug Classification

Ayurvedic drugs are classified as

  • Scientifically studied drugs
  • Popular non- toxic drugs
  • Hereditary and patent drugs

The first category has been scientifically studied and the therapeutic claims made on their behalf have been substantiated. Second category is time tested and popular for their therapeutic utility, and absolutely non-toxic. Some physicians have specialized in curing certain diseases. Many Ayurvedic companies have formulated effective drugs.

In Ayurveda different pharmaceutical processes are followed in the preparation of drugs to make the medicines easily administrable, tasteful, digestible, assimilative, toxin free and more preservable.

Ayurvedic medicines are in the form of decoctions, dried powder, thick paste, ashes, pills, oils, liquid paste and fermented preparations.

There are Ayurvedic health care products for disorders of every system of the body.

  1. Digestive system
    Ayurveda identifies the origin of most diseases in poor or wrong functioning of digestive fire. There are a large number of Ayurvedic medicines to treat the disorders of digestive system, metabolic disorders such as Obesity, Anorexia, various types of dysentery, constipation, colic, hemorrhoids, vomiting, hyper acidity, ulcers, diseases of liver and gallbladder such as hepatitis, gallstones, malabsorption, candida, parasites etc.

  2. Respiratory system
    Treatments are available for flu, cough, sore throat, laryngitis, bronchitis, asthma, hay fever and allergic rhinitis.

  3. Circulatory system
    Effective system is available for heart disease, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, hemorrhage and anemia.

  4. Urinary tract and water metabolism disorders
    There are effective Ayurvedic herbs for tonifying and strengthening kidneys. Medical treatments are available for difficult urination, edema, urinary tract infection, stones in urinary tract and diabetes.

  5. Reproductive system
    Ayurveda has formulated a number of medicines that enhance reproductive health and vitalizes the sexual energy. Treatments for diseases of male and female reproductive system have been found effective.

    Treatments are given for sexual debility, sterility, enlarged prostrate, genital herpes, disorders in menstruation cycles, premenstrual stress, amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), dismenorrhea (difficult menstruation), menorrhagia (excess menstruation), leucorrhea (abnormal discharge from vagina), menopause problems, breast or uterine cyst or tumor, pelvic inflammatory diseases, habitual abortion, pregnancy care, post partum care etc.

    Febrile and infectious diseases. Ayurvedic medicines traditionally have been used to treat febrile diseases such as malaria, epticemia, pneumonia, bronchitis and infections. Treatment is given for all kind of skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, and contact dermatitis.

  6. Miscellaneous conditions
    Herbs have been used to successfully heal traumatic injuries. Aloe jell, turmeric etc are now making a come back even in allopathic medicine. Arthritis is one of the most chronic and degenerative diseases. Ayurveda has effective cure for this disease. Bleeding gums and dental problems can be healed through Ayurveda. Ayurveda has effective healing for even killer diseases such as cancer.
